This course is aimed at reasonably experienced sea kayakers who would like to stretch their comfort zone and further develop skills in moderate/advanced sea conditions. Depending on the conditions that we have during the course we will look at dealing with strong winds, breaking waves, rockhopping, surfing and tide races; from the perspective of boat handling, safety and leadership.
You should be at or above the BC Sea Kayak Award, BC Coastal Sea Kayak Award you should be an asset to the group in up to force 4 winds and 3 Knots of tide. A reliable roll is helpful but not vital.
We will work on skills to help you get towards the BC sea kayak leader and advanced sea kayak leader awards as well as the BC Advanced personal performance award You will probably have a good idea of what you want to look at on this course, and we try to keep it flexible enough to accommodate all your aspirations and needs. We could cover up to 15-20 miles in a day depending on conditions and ability of the group. This course can be tied in with BC Personal Performance Sea Awards.
Maximum group size is 4 people to 1 coach, so individual coaching addressing your wants and needs is realistic and achievable.
This is your opportunity to take the plunge and learn the skills that will allow you to take your sea kayaking to the next level. Visit the offshore islands, play in those tide races and keep yourself and others safe.
You should leave this course having increased your confidence and learnt new skills to get out there and practice.
During the course we will endeavor to cover:
Rescues
We can help you develop a repertoire of different rescues to help make you safer out on the water and able to help others in moderate/advanced sea states. We can help build confidence in rough water scenarios and work on rolling and self-rescues in a range of environments.
Surf
We have consistent surf with beaches that having varying levels of exposure to our Atlantic swells, this allows us to choose the right size surf to help you develop your surfing skills
Navigation
This is an integral part of becoming a self-sufficient sea kayaker. Each morning we will look at the forecast together to decide where the best location for the day will be. Pembrokeshire has some of the most exciting tidal flows in the British Isles and is the perfect venue to learn and refine your tidal understanding and planning.
Personal skills
During the course we will be able to work on any aspect of your personal paddling skills to help build your confidence. These skills will be based around the BC sea kayak leader, advanced sea kayak leader and BC Advanced Sea Kayak Award.
Journeys
We try to adapt to our ever changing sea scape and use this amazing outdoor classroom to help you develop your skills whilst we journey along the coastline. We often journey up to 15-20 miles along the coastline traveling through the rock gardens, caves, tide races and playing on the surf beaches. We can also get out to the more remote outer islands of Pembrokeshire where we can experience increased exposure to tidal flow and swell.
Leadership and Incident management
We will work on developing strategies for leadership of groups in moderate/advanced sea trips, this will look at group control, positioning, reading the water and dealing with incidents as they arise.
